The Singular Lighting Universe of Catellani & Smith
“I’m not a designer. I’m not an artist. I’m just someone who does what he loves,” says Enzo Catellani, founder and creative force behind Catellani & Smith.
For over 35 years, Catellani has been creating luminaires that resonate with design lovers around the world. The result is a growing body of work that includes some truly iconic pieces – lighting objects that often blur the line between functional design and light sculpture.
These creations bring atmosphere and presence to a space, whether used as individual centrepieces or arranged in immersive lighting installations – and we are proud to incorporate them regularly into our own interior projects.

Craftsmanship in the Truest Sense
To this day, Catellani & Smith lights are handmade in their riverside workshops near Bergamo. Enzo Catellani, now joined by his children Giulia and Tobia, continues to uphold a philosophy rooted in perfection through craftsmanship.
“Beauty is subjective – but perfection is not,” Catellani insists.
Each light is given the time it needs – not rushed, but revealed through careful hands and creative experimentation.

For Catellani, the workshop is a laboratory of ideas, where materials and intuition take form. Only once the essence of a piece has been captured does it enter the technical phase of production.
New technologies and alternative energy sources often inspire new designs and material combinations. Aluminium, brass, and iron are among the preferred elements – each treated not just as matter, but as part of a creative dialogue.

Floating Light Clouds and Glittering Trees
One of the brand’s most iconic pieces is the Fil de Fer – a delicate globe crafted from aluminium wire, formed by hand and illuminated with dozens of tiny bulbs, each individually fixed within the wire mesh. No two are alike.
Four Fil de Fer spheres currently illuminate the café at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London – a testament to the light’s architectural beauty and ethereal presence.
From indoor atmospheres to outdoor art pieces, Catellani & Smith creates lighting that evokes nature: lamps that bloom like glowing flowers, transform trees into shimmering sculptures, or hover overhead like luminous clouds.

Who is Smith? A Name with a Story
We, too, once wondered who “Smith” might be. Founder Enzo Catellani now shares the story openly: Logan Smith was not, as initially claimed, a British architect – but rather, his horse.
The invented partner added gravitas, lent the brand a touch of mystery, and allowed Catellani to keep himself out of the spotlight.
A fitting gesture for a company that lets its work – and its light – speak for itself.
