Cassina – Where Design Icons Meet Visionary Craft

Celebrated for its legendary portfolio of design icons and collaborations with some of the most influential contemporary architects and designers, Cassina has shaped the evolution of Italian furniture design for nearly a century.

In the 1950s, Cassina pioneered the shift from traditional artisanal production to industrial furniture manufacturing – setting a new standard for modern design excellence.

The Hall of Fame of Design

From Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret, to Gerrit Rietveld, Tobia and Afra Scarpa – Cassina is home to the most revered names in 20th-century design. Their work lives on in the brand’s iconic I Maestri collection, which brings together reissues of furniture by the great modernist architects of our time.

Each year, Cassina adds new historic pieces to the collection, carefully re-engineered with cutting-edge technology – without compromising the original vision. Among the icons: the LC2 and LC3 armchairs, known formally as Fauteuil Grand Confort, designed by the legendary trio Le Corbusier, Jeanneret and Perriand. Or the Utrecht Armchair by Gerrit Rietveld, with its grounded seat and signature zigzag stitching – on view in our Munich showroom.

A Brand Built on Furniture History

Founded in 1927 by Cesare and Umberto Cassina in Meda, just north of Milan, the company stands as a pioneer of Italian industrial design. In the post-war era, Cassina redefined furniture production by bridging traditional craftsmanship with the promise of serial manufacturing – a balance it continues to perfect to this day.

Milestones in Modern Design

As early as the late 1940s, Cassina began collaborating with visionary architects. A notable milestone: Gio Ponti’s Superleggera Chair (model 699), introduced in 1957. Weighing just 1.7 kilograms, it remains a symbol of structural elegance and intelligent design.

Among our personal favourites is the CAB Chair by Mario Bellini, crafted from a saddle leather cover tailored like a bespoke suit over a steel skeleton. Now part of MoMA’s permanent collection in New York, it’s become an icon in its own right.

Other standouts include:

  • The Capitol Complex Armchair – with its inverted “V” legs – a poetic tribute to Pierre Jeanneret

  • The Ventaglio Desk by Charlotte Perriand, issued in a rare limited edition of just 30 pieces worldwide – one of which can be seen in our Nymphenburger Straße showroom in Munich

MARINA WOSCHNI

“To me, Cassina represents the coming together of great originals – but also the courage to embrace the new. Like their collaborations with boundary-pushing creatives such as Virgil Abloh.”

Tomorrow’s Classics – The I Contemporanei Collection

I Contemporanei is Cassina’s second major collection – dedicated to collaborations with today’s most renowned international designers. This includes sofas, sideboards, beds and coffee tables that reflect contemporary visions grounded in timeless quality.

Designers such as Piero Lissoni, Michael Anastassiades, Michele De Lucchi, Formafantasma, Neri & Hu, Philippe Starck, and Patricia Urquiola have all contributed to the collection. The Spanish architect and designer has served as Cassina’s Art Director since 2016 and is the creative force behind Dudet – a graceful seating collection featured in our showroom display.
