Restaurant Storstad

Stuːr·staːd

The redesign of Restaurant Storstad – Swedish for “metropolis” – in the heart of Regensburg fuses Nordic urbanity with the historical backdrop of the city’s famed cathedral. For host couple Anton and Anna Schmaus, we created a space where culinary excellence takes centre stage – with the interior stepping back, allowing guests to focus on the food, the views, and the living city just beyond the glass.

THE SPACE AS A STAGE

Cognac-toned Minotti leather chairs invite you to sit back and settle in. Slender wood and metal slats span from walls to furnishings in a seamless visual rhythm that draws the eye upward. The table layout is intentionally flexible, creating a warm and unpretentious atmosphere with softly flowing island clusters. In summer, the floor-to-ceiling glass facade fully opens, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior – turning the cathedral square into a natural extension of the restaurant.

Materials such as oak, brushed metal, and structured textiles add understated accents that combine elegance and function with effortless ease.

STEFAN ROLLWAGEN

“Anton Schmaus was deliberately looking for a partner with a fresh perspective. Our emphasis on atmospheric wellbeing rather than standardized solutions made it possible to create a design that invites guests to linger – like a private living space that just happens to serve Michelin-starred cuisine.”
