this exceptional penthouse belongs to a visionary entrepreneur with a love for sculptural space.
A UNIQUE DESIGN DREAM
On the top floor of a listed turn-of-the-century building in Munich’s Augustenstraße, Alexander Schönauer brought his personal vision to life. With the same creative force that has driven his fashion agency since 1987, he expanded the attic into a spectacular living space – crowned by a vaulted ceiling crafted from finely joined oak, spanning 160 m² and unlike anything else in the city.
INTERIORS BY EGETEMEIER & MINOTTI
What started as a spontaneous visit to the Minotti Store in Munich became the foundation of this design journey. There, Schönauer not only discovered the perfect sculptural language for his space – he also met Stefan Rollwagen, head of the store and founder of the premium brand Egetemeier. Together, they transformed the up to 4.5-metre-high room into an elevated, serene residence – all without stealing the spotlight from the impressive ceiling construction.
Alexander Schönauer
“An apartment like this is a one-off. You can’t look for it – you have to create it from your own imagination.”
CEILING AS SCULPTURE
The solution was a refined room-in-room concept: freestanding elements shape the interior without compromising the view of the ceiling. The custom Steininger kitchen becomes the functional threshold between kitchen and living area. A glass-fronted wardrobe leads into the private retreat – a spa-like bath and bedroom, all with unobstructed views into the vaulted roof.
EVERYTHING BESPOKE
Natural white-oiled oak parquet flows seamlessly from living to sleeping quarters. The marble slabs? Hand-selected by Schönauer himself during a trip to Italy – naturally.
